Long and short vowels differ in English, as in German, not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. Long vowels are more closed than short vowels, or short vowels are more open than long vowels. Long and short vowels thus differ in terms of tongue position, as can be seen from the vowel trapezoid and from the representation in IPA notation:
administration [ədˌmɪnɪsˈtreɪʃən] (derivation: administer [ədˌmɪnɪstə]), Confederations [kənˌfedəˈreɪʃənz](Cup) (derivation: confederate [kənˈfedərɪt]), consideration [kənˌsɪdɘˈreɪʃən] (derivation: consider [kənˈsɪdɘ]).
The most important parts of the speech beat are the first stressed syllable (head) and the last stressed syllable (nucleus), also called the center of gravity of the speech beat. The unstressed syllables preceding the head are the pre-head. The unstressed syllables following the nucleus form the tail. The stressed and unstressed syllables between the head and nucleus are called the body.
The graphic representation of the intonation is complex. Therefore, in most textbooks of the English language, simpler notations of the tone progression can be found, which, however, presuppose the knowledge of the basic form of English intonation presented here.
