In fact, in the sixties, part of its warehouses collapsed, only a century and a half after its construction, causing the departure of the market stallholders. In addition, the Tamarguillo flood caused many residents of the center to move to the outskirts of the city, dropping the market’s clientele, while the emergence of new supermarkets caused other placeros to leave.
Between 1999 and 2003 and under the mandates of Sánchez Monteseirín and Rojas Marcos, an attempt was made to retake the issue, promoting the andalucistas a new market that included a subway parking that cancelled the recovery of the archaeological remains; stopping the works with the foundations already 32 meters deep and an access ramp from Imagen Street.
The new City Council rejected what was already built despite the cost of compensation, thinking of another project that would bring to light the valuable traces of the past found on the site, converted since 2003 in an excavation field surrounded by fences that gave the place a pitiful view and whose positive side was the discovery of the archaeological remains of the so-called “Hispania” colony, with the most important Roman site in the city.
